Marie Phillips is a busy mom of four with a passion for bodybuilding. She's also a perfect realfemalebuilding.com Fitness Athlete of the Month because she made the leap from regular but half-hearted cardio to disciplined bodybuilding and it changed her life!

She's now evangelical about convincing other women not to fear pumping iron – and her hard, toned, but curvy physique is definitely her best argument!

Marie says she had always been healthy and keen on cardio, but the day she joined her partner at the squat rack was the day she fell in love with bodybuilding.

She says: “ I used to be what they call "fit fat" as I used to spend an hour on the crosstrainer and really sweat so I lost weight but my shape never improved, I've always eaten healthily but my body has never changed.

“My partner was into bodybuilding and while he headed to the weight bench with his protein shake, I headed for the cross trainer with my water. After one particular session, I joined him in the weights, I was the only female there so felt a bit intimidated but I did a few exercises with a pair of dumbbells and I was hooked.

“ I love the way using heavy weights is transforming my physique, my muscles are looking more defined and toned and I'm beginning to look leaner.

“All my hard work is now beginning to show, but to make it work you have to eat clean too.

“Lifting weights doesnt have to mean getting huge muscles, it means sculpting your body, re-shaping what god gave you, toned arms, shapely back & shoulders, firm breasts, toned tummy, pert, rounded butt and lean legs, the clean eating gives you the energy to work harder, make your skin glow and flush out all the toxins. Remember it's never too late!”

What contest are you prepping for: I'm am prepping for a NABBA Miss Toned competition

How's it going/where are you at: I'm on a special diet and training plan which means I'm in the gym 5/6 times a week lifting weights and doing 10 mins cardio after each session, once a week I will do 45 mins of incline power walking on the treadmill.

How many years have you trained: I've only been training seriously for 4 months.

Why Bodybuilding: I love the way bodybuilding changes your whole body shape, I used to be what they call "fit fat" as I used to spend an hour on the crosstrainer and really sweat so I lost weight but my shape never improved, I've always eaten healthily but my body has never changed.

How and why did you start ? My partner was into bodybuilding and while he headed to the weight bench with his protein shake, I headed for the cross trainer with my water. After one particular session, I joined him in the weights, I was the only female there so felt a bit intimidated but I did a few exercises with a pair of dumbbells and I was hooked.

What is your dream ? My ultimate dream is to place 1st, 2nd or 3rd in a Miss Toned competition then maybe move up into the next category.

What is your short term goal right now ? I want to get myself into the best possible shape I can for the Miss Toned Competition, I will be one of the older ladies competing so I have to work extra hard.

What keeps you motivated: The feeling I get after I've finished a particularly hard session keeps me wanting more and feeling more confident now than I was in my twenties or thirties. Keeping my goal of stepping on stage looking perfect and living a healthy, fit life for my children is my best motivatvion.

What do you love most about bodybuilding ? I love the way using heavy weights is transforming my physique, my muscles are looking more defined and toned and I'm beginning to look leaner.

What do you hate the most ? I hate the doms lol. There is nothing that I hate about bodybuilding.

What is the biggest thrill or moment you have got from bb ? The moment I walk into the gym and I'm able to lift or squat just as heavy as some male bodybuilder. Seeing my progress at every session and every time I hit a PB

How often do you train ? I train 6 days a week

What is your program/split ? I've found I don't stick to a particular plan, as long as I train every muscle group in a week.

What really works for you ? Concentrating on one muscle group at a time is better for me, as I only have 45 mins to train I can really work that muscle.

Favourite body part to train & why ? I like training glutes & shoulders as those are my weaker points.

Biggest improvements in the last 12 months. Being able to squat my own body weight.

Improvements you are targeting ? I'm targeting everywhere as I need to be improving all the time, getting better all the time.

What tips would you give to newbies ? Get a good trainer who will devise a workout and nutrition plan that's tailored especially for you. Don't give up even if some days it's hard to go to the gym. Keep your goal in mind at all times.

Any training secrets ? Lift as heavy as you can, start with 12 reps, then 10 reps then 8 reps and take lots of protein.

Favourite supplements and why ? I'm a massive fan of a protein powder called MD Protein 3/20, it has a very high protein content, low carbs and low fat, and all the flavours are delicious on their own or mixed with milk, fruit or simply water. This was designed by the guy who owns the gym I go to as he was an overall winner in a NABBA Competition when he was 40 (he is also one of my trainers) there is nothing else in this powder which is great when your eating clean, i also take a very good female nutrition multi vitamin and BCAA.

I have 4 kids.
2 of my own ages 7 and 12
2 step kids ages 2 and 6
