The 41-year-old started competing on the big stage in 2004 after bodybuilding legend Charles Glass took her under his wing.
She placed second in the NPC California State and was hooked. The 5ft 7ins 135lb Californian says Glass changed her whole approach to training.
She said: Like most people, I spent a lot of time in the gym pumping iron; putting on muscle and thinking I really knew what I was doing but I also spent an equal amount of time in the fast food drive-thru once the workout was over.
“I decided one day to take the real challenge of not just being more consistent in my training, but to challenge myself to change my diet; not for just health reasons but to give myself the opportunity to see what my shape really looked like.
“From there I challenged myself to take it to the next level and step on stage to see how I would mesh up with the other competitors.
“My physique really changed when my trainer Charles Glass changed my workout plan. Legs would be 8-10 different exercises of 40-50 reps (that was if he was being nice) and upper body would be 4-5 different exercises per body part of 30-40 reps.
“I found that my physique responded really well to circuit training; nonstop with plenty of reps.”
Avis says her favourite bodypart is her legs but it is often her unbelievably peaked bi's that get the attention.
