Being physically active and taking exercise is one of the 7 key steps identified by researcher which WILL dramatically cut your chances of contracting one of the big killer diseases.
In the study those who stuck to the seven rules were a massive 51% less likely to suffer cancer or heart disease.
The seven rules, called 'Life's Simple 7', are:
1. Being physically active
2. Keeping a healthy weight
3. Eating a healthy diet
4. Maintaining healthy cholesterol levels
5. Keeping blood pressure down
6. Regulating blood sugar levels
7. Not smoking
And if you can manage just six of the lifestyle choices from the American Heart Association your risk of cancer will still be reduced by 51%.
Hitting four of the Simple 7 led to a 33% reduction and adhering to just one or two resulted in a 21% reduction.
A spokesman said: “This adds to the strong body of literature suggesting that it's never too late to change, and that if you make changes like quitting smoking and improving your diet, you can reduce your risk for both cardiovascular disease and cancer.”
