However, a new study shows that fit women such as female bodybuilders and fitness trainers will reap the many other health benefits of red wine which include fighting diabetes, dementia, and heart disease.
Unfortunately sedentary women, especially the overweight and obese, lose all the benefits this most appetising of health drinks can bring.
Studies suggested that the active compound known as resveratrol found in red wine helps prevent heart disease
But new Danish research aimed at refining the study shows that being overweight blocks all potential health benefits
Resveratrol, the active compound found in the skins of red grapes and cocoa, is an antioxidant produced by plants to help protect them from extreme environments and block the effects of ultraviolet sunlight, infections and temperature changes.
The research, published in journal Diabetes, found that although test-tube studies had suggested that resveratrol had an effect on obesity, diabetes, high blood-pressure and blood cholesterol, it had no effect on 24 obese, but otherwise healthy volunteers in the study.
Dr David Sinclair of Harvard Medical School has claimed that resveratrol will eventually lead to the development of drugs that will enable humans to live until 150.
